It is finally my chance to design for the next Kitty Bee Designs Aloha Challenge #121: Under the Sea. One of the challenge sponsors, Kinda Cute by Patricia, provided the most adorable mermaid images for us to use, and I had so much fun coloring up her Mermaid on Rock digital image.
I wanted to create a sunrise sky peeking behind the mermaid's outstretched tail, so after determining image placement on the card front, I began blending distress inks radiating from my chosen point--working from golden yellow to orange, ending in dusky blue. I love how the sky came together! I colored up the image with Copic markers and then fussy cut it out. Wanting to create texture and dimension in the splashing waves, I layered Nuvo Embellishment Mousse in Cornflower Blue with Aquamarine just in spots, dabbing white acrylic paint for sea spray. Note: Due to the wetness in the mousse, the bottom edge of the image (beneath the splashing waves) began to curl and crack after drying. It is noticeable, but not enough for me to trash the card. If I try this technique again, I will make sure that the bottom edge of my top image is flush to the bottom of the card front.
To complete the card, I stamped a sentiment from my stash using VersaFine Onyx Black ink in the upper left corner. This panel was mounted onto a top-folding kraft card base (and mailed to its recipient).
