I wanted to use last month's Spellbinders (affiliate) release Hybrid Tea Rose and Tea Pot from Garden Club by Susan Tierney-Cockburn (affiliate) in a different fashion, opting to create black roses for Halloween. Can't you picture these black flowers embellishing all sorts of Halloween projects?
I wanted to order Susan's Garden Ultimate Tool Kit (affiliate) from Spellbinders so I could more properly shape the petals, but it was sold out. I even attempted to order from Amazon (affiliate and appears to be in stock) and my order was cancelled. So, I decided to be resourceful and scout the house. I shaped the petals with the rounded cap of my white gel pen atop a folded cloth napkin. The cloth napkin provided enough give and the rounded pen cap worked great at curling and rounding the petals. I inked the edges of all petals with Candied Apple Distress Oxide ink (Amazon affiliate). While hard to see, it does add a bit more than leaving the petals entirely black. I doted the centers with a white gel pen. The tea pot was lightly inked with a spiderweb stencil from Jaded Blossom and all was added to paper from Alexandra Renke, purchased from Piece Craft Love (affiliate with 10% off).
